Reflections, criticisms, and general rumination about contemporary music, lyrics, and jazz by Kelly Park, musician, artist, producer.
About the Book
Who knew that the guy behind the piano - so accommodating to the audience, so supportive to his fellow musicians, could be so thoughtful, so opinionated, and so downright funny? A few paragraphs into this book, and it’s pretty clear that there’s a lot more going on in the mind and personality of a musician who is often ignored or taken for granted, than you might have expected. Kelly Park speaks for that most serious and least appreciated of those who have made their living (or in many cases, USED to make their living!) playing jazz. But this is not just a book for commiserating fellow musicians; his insights into how to be a thoughtful listener - how and what to listen for in any kind of music - will have value for all.
I've worked with Kelly Park for years in combos and big bands. He is an amazing musician and an amazing individual. He is an intelligent, experienced, articulate, and rather opinionated guy. Aside from playing professionally for decades, he taught at the Berklee school, he ran a successful jazz club for a number of years, and he plays drums and piano (and arranges for all sorts of ensembles) with almost equal proficiency and authority. So if you're wondering if he's for real, well, he is. If you're a singer, you need this book. If you're a player, you'll enjoy this book. If you're an artist of any kind, you'll appreciate this book.
Kelly Park is a friend and I recently saw him with his Big Band. He autographed it for me. Only book I own (and have a lot) that is autographed by the author. Haven't finished reading it yet, but really enjoying the read. Lots of fun observations. Highly recommend it.
